Archie Stewart, 89, of New Canaan, CT passed away on September 1, 2018 at home with his loving family by his side.  He was born on January 17, 1929 in Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland to the late William and Mary Jane Heatrick Stewart.

Archie Stewart.

Archie, the 11th of 13 children, was born and raised on Gartenane Farm. At the age of 18 he immigrated to Connecticut and worked as a stonemason and house builder. His work ethic was legendary, and more than 100 homes in New Canaan, Wilton, and Stamford were built by his hands. More important to him was the number of people he was able to help with his skills. He was a fixture around town, whether driving to his work site or up on the scaffolding with his faithful dog Bailey always by his side. A sample of his work, one of his many labors of love, is the stone wall in front of the United Methodist Church, where he was a member. In his later years, his passion was gardening, and he provided his friends and neighbors with peas, rhubarb, and his prized tomatoes. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading about history, traveling, and eating a hamburger at Uncle Joe’s restaurant.

Archie is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara Brennan Stewart; his loving children Bonnie Elizabeth Stewart of Vero Beach, FL; Glenn and Martha Stewart of Micanopy, FL; and Todd Stewart of New Canaan, CT; as well as three grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Dennis Archie Stewart of Hoboken, NJ; Meggie Stewart of Atlanta, GA; and Abbey Stewart of San Francisco, CA.
