A 34-year-old New Canaan woman was arrested Sunday night and charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

At about 7:41 p.m. on March 4, police took a complaint at department headquarters about an assault that had occurred earlier in the day at a Jelliff Mill Road home, officials said.

Following an investigation, officers found the woman at her residence and charged her with the misdemeanor offenses.

It wasn’t clear just how or how severely the victim was injured, whether the victim was related to the arrested woman or how or what the dispute involved. Police withheld further details, saying the incident had been classified as a domestic matter.

A person is guilty of third-degree assault, under state law, when with intent to cause physical injury to another person, he or she causes such injury to such person or to a third person; or recklessly causes serious physical injury to another person; or with criminal negligence, he causes physical injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon, a dangerous instrument or an electronic defense weapon.

Under state law, a person is guilty of disorderly conduct when, with intent to cause inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, engages in fighting or in violent, tumultuous or threatening behavior; or by offensive or disorderly conduct, annoys or interferes with another person, among other reasons.

Police held the woman on $2,500 bond and scheduled her to appear Monday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
