Letter: ‘Thank You’ to Local Volunteers

It takes volunteers.

Volunteers at Memorial Day to offer Buddy Poppies. Volunteers to give a gift for their Buddy Poppies.

It took an Eagle Scout volunteer to identify and catalog all Veterans buried in Lakeview Cemetery.

It took a Girl Scout volunteer to identify and catalog Veterans buried in the 13 private cemeteries in New Canaan.

It took volunteers from the National Charity League to tie 1,100 bows on Christmas wreaths – in 22º temperature.

It took volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 70, from CERT, from DAR, from Kiwanis, from the Exchange Club, from the Girl Scouts, from the New Canaan Fire Department and from our elected officials to place the 1,100 wreaths on all of the Veterans grave sites.

It takes volunteers. Thanks to all who helped.

Happy New Year to all.

Letter: Vote ‘No’ To Removing 1st Selectman as Board of Finance Chair

Dear Editor:

There’s an old military axiom that says “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

For the past 50 plus years our Board of Finance has been led by our elected first selectman who serves as ex officio chair. Some want to change that. The entire 12 members of the Board of Finance do not want to change that. The three members of our Board of Selectman do not want to change that. Half of the members of our Town Council do not want to change that.

Letter: A Thank You from VFW Post 653 Commander Peter C. Langenus

Thanks to all who made Memorial Day in New Canaan such a memorable event. Thanks to all who marched; thanks to all who cheered. Thanks again to our grand marshall Ruth Gutt for her service to the nation as an Air Force nurse. Thanks to Boyd Harden, our speaker, who told the story of sacrifice in the most personal of terms and how small towns like New Canaan paid for victory with the lives of our young. And special thanks to all citizens of New Canaan who purchased a poppy this year.
