Police are investigating a string of car break-ins and burglaries reported Friday.

A red, newer-model crossover-type vehicle had been spotted in New Canaan around the time of the larcenies, and police in Darien are investigating a series of car break-ins there that involved a red 2013 Ford Explorer, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.

The break-ins in New Canaan include (all on Sept. 19):

  • 10:22 a.m.: A 42-year-old Darien woman reported that the rear driver’s side window on her 2010 Mercedes Benz—parked in the small lot beside Waveny House—was smashed, and several items were missing from her car. Those include an $8,000 Rolex watch with diamonds, $2,000 Givenchy purse, $200 Stuart Weitzman wallet and $200 in cash. She had been away from her car in the park for about one hour.
  • 10:30 a.m.: A 51-year-old Darien woman said the driver’s side window of her 2009 Lincoln Navigator was smashed where the car was parked on Lapham Road toward the Merritt Parkway overpass (near the entrance to the park’s trails). She had parked her car around 9:55 a.m. and when she returned found these items missing: $100 purse, $200 Kate Spade sunglasses, $200 Mosley Tribes sunglasses, $200 Oliver People’s sunglasses and $450 in cash.
  • 12:49 p.m.: A 54-year-old Stamford woman told police that she parked in the Carriage House parking lot at Mead Park (that’s the small structure on the park side of Richmond Hill Road, opposite the bottom of Grove Street—slated for demolition if funds are secured to mitigate the asbestos there). She parked her BMW X3 crossover and was gone for just 10 minutes walking her dog she said. It isn’t clear whether the car was locked. Missing when she returned was a Coach purse worth $200 and $150 in cash. A Samsung Galaxy mobile phone worth $500 also had been missing but later was found in the grass nearby (it has geo-location tracking on it).
  • 4:12 p.m.: Also at Mead Park, a 42-year-old New Canaan woman reported that around 10:45 a.m. she had parked next to the tennis courts in the road that goes through the park, and when she returned to her unlocked car found her purse missing. The woman didn’t realize at the time that it was missing, thinking it was home, police said. It’s a red leather wallet and it isn’t clear how much it’s worth.
