The winter storm that struck New Canaan Tuesday morning left behind less snow than expected—just two inches where forecasters called for up to five—though it also created what officials called hazardous road conditions throughout town.

The Fire Commission canceled its 7:30 p.m. meeting due to the messy roads, Chairman Jack Horner said. (The Board of Finance held its regular evening meeting as scheduled.)

On a day when the public schools were closed and New Canaan Library closed early, a snowy morning turned into a sleeting and rainy night as temperatures hovered near freezing and authorities urged motorists to stay in if possible. Fire Chief Jack Hennessey reported no snow-related emergencies late Tuesday.

The National Weather Service put New Canaan under a winter weather advisory through midnight Wednesday, saying ice and up to a half-inch of sleet would accumulate overnight.

Original Story

New Canaan Library will close at 12 p.m. Tuesday, officials said, as a winter storm expected to deliver several inches of snow and create hazardous driving conditions in the afternoon bears down on the town.

The National Weather Service said up to five inches of snow will blanket New Canaan during the day, with freezing rain and sleet coining with near-freezing temperatures at night. New Canaan is a under a Winter Weather Advisory through early Wednesday as the storm “will cause travel difficulties,” the NWS said.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute.”

Snow began falling in New Canaan before 9 a.m. Tuesday. Metro-North Railroad reported “Good Service” on the branch line at 10:30 a.m.

New Canaan Public Schools on Friday night notified families that they would close for the day, citing the expected poor road conditions.
