Police on Saturday afternoon arrested a 42-year-old New Canaan woman who crashed her motor vehicle into a fence while intoxicated and with a child in the car.

At about 1:45 p.m. on May 26, officers were dispatched to South Avenue near Bank Street on a report of the crash and a motorist trying to flee the scene, police said.

As officers drove to the location, a dispatcher told them that the motorist had exited her car and appeared to be intoxicated, according to a police report.

The officers smelled alcohol on the woman, the report said.

She failed field sobriety tests and admitted to drinking wine prior to picking up her child, it said.

She was charged with risk of injury to a child, a felony offense, as well as driving under the influence.

Police released the woman on $2,750 bond and scheduled her to appear June 8 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
