It isn’t clear what the motorist’s condition is. Police said late Wednesday that he was alive in the hospital.

No other cars were involved, officials said. New Canaan fire, police and paramedics responded to the scene. Police were directing traffic around the crashed black Cadillac STS sedan, which remained in the roadway following the accident, its entire front end caved in and debris including eyeglasses and a tire scattered in the woods off of the shoulder.

Route 123 is closed, except to school buses and emergency responders, between Parade Hill and Country Club Roads.
