The first-ever show from the nonprofit organization asked locals to submit pictures that captured what was special to them about New Canaan, and scores of photographers came back with more than 120 entries, said NCCF Executive Director Cynthia Gorey.

“We are so pleased to promote the ‘I [Heart] New Canaan’ idea,” Gorey told the crowd during a brief break in the wine-and-cheese event. “We love New Canaan the Community Foundation is an important part of this town. This was just an idea that came into our minds and we said we’d see if we get any photos, and were astounded by how many we got and how wonderful they were.”

The photos were judged by professional art appreciators from Carriage Barn Arts Center, Silvermine Arts Center and New Canaan High School. (The three adult contest winners’ pictures and youth winner Hayden Hane’s entry can be seen at the start of the photo gallery above.)

Gorey specifically thanked Bankwell for hosting the gathering and offering up its walls space to the winners as well as several photos selected as favorites by the NCCF staff and some board members.

Heidi DeWyngaert, president of Bankwell, thanked those in attendance for coming and said: “We love the community. We love being a part of the community. We love having this kind of event here, because it just brings us closer to the people that we want to work with and do business with, so thank you for coming and enjoy.”

Carrie Deane Corcoran, who earned a second-place nod with her photo of a row of fire helmets, snapped at a Caffeine & Carburetors event downtown last fall, called herself a photography enthusiast who happened on the photo opportunity while her husband was talking to one of the guys about volunteering.

All photos are available for purchase, Gorey said. Bankwell is located at 208 Elm St., and if you’re coming in off of Elm, the gallery is just beyond the row of cashiers in front.
