New Canaan Fire Department officials at about 11:15 a.m. on Monday responded to a request from Officer Allyson Halm—head of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section—to assist in corralling a baby deer that had become trapped in a backyard on Millport Avenue. Halm said the firefighters were highly responsive and helpful, and the animal was freed. ***

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved a contract between the Parks Department and Karl Chevrolet for two trucks: a new low-boy that will cost a net of $50,644 and a new pickup truck that will cost $41,670. Those costs reflect what officials called generous trade-in price discounts from the local dealership. “I think the Karls are being very nice to us,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said.

A Logan Road dog is under 45 days of strict home confinement after suffering a puncture wound while tussling with a raccoon, officials said. It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, and the 12-year-old Border collie had the raccoon in his mouth when the mammal appeared to have bit the dog in the face. The dog is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations, according to Officer Allyson Halm of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section. The raccoon got away. ***

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved by a 3-0 vote the hiring of Sandra Dennies as interim CFO for the town.

‘We Like To Celebrate Everything’: Special Church at First Presbyterian

Every Thursday for the past 29 years, Jassinia Mysogland has arrived at First Presbyterian Church on Oenoke Ridge Road for a unique experience featuring parties, crafts, snacks, music and most of all—friendship. Last week, Mysogland joined fellow members of a program called ‘Special Church’ in celebrating New Year’s and a birthday, as well as the return of Cathy Newman, a former co-leader visiting from California. Program director Nancy Reichart said with a smile, “We like to celebrate everything.”

Approaching its 30th anniversary this year, Special Church was founded by parents of special needs children and adults seeking an “alternative church experience,” Reichart said. With 16 members hailing from New Canaan and surrounding towns, Reichart calls First Presbyterian Church “the best place to be on a Thursday afternoon.”

Because all of its current members are Christians, Special Church is considered ecumenical, she said, though it absolutely would welcome and accommodate people of different faiths. Thursday’s 2.5-hour program got off to its typically measured start, with members trickling in to mingle, read aloud a “reading of the week,” and complete a New Year’s-themed craft.

Letter: Grace Farms Has Helped Clients, Families of Local Nonprofit Organization

As founder and director of Arts For Healing, a creative arts therapy center for special needs children and adults, I am writing to express how much Grace Farms has done for all the families that receive our services. We were given a space grant by Grace Farms Foundation when they first opened Grace Farms in October 2015, and since then, have been able to expand our group offerings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Since our location at 24 Grove St. is small, and most groups take place in the outreach programs we provide to schools and developmental centers, the space at Grace Farms allowed us to create new, innovative programming for children and adults. It has been a wonderful and creative collaboration.

New Canaan Fire Department and NCPD Animal Control officials at 10:51 a.m. Saturday responded to a report of a dog who’d wandered into a storm drain in the area of Country Club and Lambert Roads. They arrived to discover that a young Newfoundland had crawled back out, to reunite with its owner. ***

The Building Department on April 20 received an application from the 136 Main St. to do some $50,000 of interior renovations at the former Barolo space, slated to open this spring as Spiga Café, an Italian restaurant. Work in the 4,100-square-foot space includes installation of a new bar and equipment, pizza oven and lighting.
