Letter: Trump’s Election Stirs Concern for Our Environment

Dear Editors of the NewCanaanite,

As a college student studying Political Science and Environmental Studies at Lehigh University, I have become acutely aware of the issue of climate change. After Donald Trump’s recent election, however, my concern for our planet has only grown. This is perhaps compounded by the fact that I took a class in environmental policy this fall, which emphasized the importance of legislation to bring about positive change. For this reason, I wanted to share my initial reactions to Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton. After realizing Mr. Trump’shistorical victory early that morning, I groggily looked out my windows at the familiar trees.

NCHS Community Honors Kay Timmis with a Tree Planted in Her Memory

Teachers, students, family and friends of Kay Timmis gathered Thursday afternoon for a tree planting ceremony in her honor, after the longtime New Canaan High School substitute teacher passed away suddenly in January. The ceremony was held outside the NCHS Library, and those who attended took a moment to remember Timmis as a substitute teacher and how she touched the lives of the NCHS community. Priscilla Schulz, NCHS Physical Education teacher, coach, and longtime friend of Timmis, organized the ceremony along with six other speakers. NCHS seniors Carly Risom, this year’s recipient of the Kay Timmis Award, and Sean Davidson had kind words to say about Timmis, along with NCHS faculty Lynda Pescatello, Michelle Luhtala, and Lenore Schneider. Timmis’ daughter, Kim, closed the ceremony with a speech.

NCHS Senior Fashion Show [PHOTOS, VIDEO]

Hundreds of parents, friends and other residents cheered from the darkened seats of the New Canaan High School auditorium on Saturday night as about 100 seniors strutted their stuff in casual, athletic, dressy and prom wear during the NCHS Senior Fashion Show. The major fundraiser for Post Prom, the annual show saw some $6,800 in tickets sold in advance, Chair Whitney Williams said. Here’s a video from the show featuring local band Triple Coil:

“It’s pretty heavily attended,” Williams said as students shuffled from a pre-show dinner in the Wagner Room to separate areas to change and get made up for the runway. “We have prom fashions from A Step Ahead in Stamford and Camillo’s in Norwalk. The rest of the fashions have been provided by local vendors.”

Those included Athletic Shoe Factory, Blaze-In, Caren Forbes, Darien Sport Shop, Island Outfitters, J. McLaughlin, Jos.
