New Canaan Police are investigating two smash-and-grabs at Waveny, reported at 1:37 and 1:58 p.m. on Jan. 27. Wallets, a purse, credit cards and miscellaneous items were stolen. ***

Congratulations to Stephen Caird, a New Canaan resident and STAR participant, on marking 35 years of employment at ACME in New Canaan.  Nancy Layman, store supervisor, presented Carid with a gift book and pin to celebrate the milestone. Carid rides his bike, walks or takes Getabout to work.

New Canaan Now & Then: The Bliss Estate [Part 2 of 2]

The New Canaan Garden Club and local gardeners made the greenhouses their focus for most of the educational efforts. 

The “car barn” became home to the children’s summer camp which was then co-sponsored by the New Canaan Audubon Society. In 1963, the Town contributed $30,000 to renovate the horse barn, which was then converted into classrooms, offices, restrooms, exhibit space and dark room. Another exciting development was that two ponds were created with the help of the New Canaan Kiwanis Club in 1965 and in 1967 the Beginner’s Nature Program opened.

Lighthouse is hosting a meetup for LGBTQ+ teens and allies in grades 6 through 12, to be held 2:45 to 4 p.m. Monday at the New Canaan YMCA. Free snacks provided, no membership or sign-in required. ***

New Canaan Police are investigating a report received at 8:31 a.m. on Jan. 10 of a vehicle stolen from a Tommy’s Lane driveway. ***

An opening reception for Silvermine Arts Center’s New Members 2024 and “Rhythm and Mood” exhibition (through March 15) will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. ***

The New Canaan Swap Shop will be closed Friday due to expected snow. ***

New Canaan Police before dawn Tuesday responded to a report of suspicious persons on Shady Knoll Lane and Orchard Drive. One vehicle was stolen from an Old Studio Road residence and recovered on the same street, police said. The police investigation is active. ***
