Scout & Molly’s, a women’s fashion boutique that two women who have since moved to New Canaan opened on Elm Street two summers ago, is to close, according to a worker at the store.

Located at 108 Elm St. with a signature pink bicycle standing outside, the store served fashion-minded, active women seeking a wide variety of styles and price points.

It isn’t clear just why or when Scout & Molly’s is closing, though it’s listed on the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce website among the scores of participating stores for this year’s Sidewalk Sale, scheduled for July 15. Its owners, Olivia Huvane and Amy Gray, could not immediately be reached for comment.

On Thursday, a sign in the window advertised a 40 to 75 percent off sale for the entire store.

Both New Canaan residents now, the women have been fast friends since meeting eight years ago as youg professional women starting their families. They’ve supported each other through childcare and career prior to launching Scout& Molly’s downtown—Huvane raising two young boys while working in fashion, Gray with two girls, a hedge fund’s accountant manager.

  1. There are three stores currently closing, Walin & Wolff, Potpourri Designs and Scout & Molly. We hear retail is suffering nationwide. Now it is clear our Town is also a victim of this trend. High rents and high taxes do not help!

  2. Or perhaps it is just plain easier and less irritating to shop online at home. No hassling with trying to find a parking space, and one doesn’t have to deal with rude and disinterested sales associates. Just a thought.

    • Unfortunately the above comment sums it up. But as for me I would rather shop local and get instant gratification then to shop online. What would you do if your town was completely empty. Just banks, restaurants and liquor store?

  3. I find it mind boggling that we all move to town for two main reasons the schools and the downtown and yet people don’t shop or buy local. Scout & Molly, Potpourri Design and Walin & Wolff are closing and that is fundamentally because not enough of people support the downtown. It’s really simple if business is strong stores continue to remain open. All we ask is that everyone try shopping here first, if the goods are not available here then try other alternatives.

  4. They are calling it the retail Ice age — they also say the
lower quality Malls may go out of business and be use for something else — medical buildings — Times they are a changing
Once just for the information I asked what the rent was for one of the empty store front — $10,000 a month — that’s a lot of sales before you even break even — the old site of our post office is now empty guess the landlord made a bad move —
but as taxes go up so do rents !!! — maybe that’s why the
for sales signs out number the campaign signs 10 to 1 TAXES!
