SUMMARY:Art of the Northeast Opening and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Northeast\, Silvermine’s signature exhibition\, with work by artists from Maine to D. C.\, will open on Saturday July 8\, 6-8pm\, in the Silvermine Galleries. The 2017 exhibition is curated by David Kiehl\, Nancy and Fred Poses Curator at the Whitney Museum. The show\, which runs through August 20\, features suites of work by each artist and provides a window into themes\, subjects\, and materials being explored in the contemporary art world. \nEach year\, a renowned curator\, gallerist or critic gives form to Art of the Northeast in\nconcept\, theme\, and artistic tone\,” said Jeffrey Mueller\, Silvermine Gallery Director.  “With his expert and accomplished eye\, Mr. Kiehl will conceive an eclectic and dynamic show\, but it is the diverse talents of the region’s artists that bring power and excitement to the exhibition.”\nDavid Kiehl is currently the Nancy and Fred Poses Curator at the Whitney. Previously\, he was associate curator of prints and illustrated books at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and a consultant curator at the Wolfsonian Foundation in Miami Beach. While at the Whitney\, Kiehl has organized shows on Edward Hopper\, Charles Burchfield\, Ellen Gallagher\, and Christian Marclay. He was responsible for the installations of the Whitney Museum’s The Art of Richard Tuttle; Kiki Smith: A Gathering; Jenny Holzer: Protect Protect; and Yayoi Kusama. He recently worked on the Whitney’s exhibition\, David Wojnarowicz: Giving Chaos Reason and Delight. In addition to his curation\, Kiehl has served as faculty for Yale University\, School of Art\, Critical Practice\, and contributed to Art News\, Art on Paper\, and various university\, gallery and museum publications. Mr. Kiehl also serves as a board member or in an advisory capacity at a number of museums and art institutions.\nThe Silvermine Galleries at 1037 Silvermine Road in New Canaan\, CT\, are open Wed. through Sat.\, 12 pm to 5 pm and Sun. from 1 pm to 5 pm.
