DESCRIPTION:Torrance York will talk about her work in conversation with Art Historian and Independent Curator\, Arianne Faber Kolb\, PhD\, on Thursday\, October 3rd at 6:00 pm at Gores Pavilion in Irwin Park\, New Canaan\, CT. The discussion will focus on York’s current solo exhibition\, Common Ground: Irwin\, that includes twelve landscape photographs created in Irwin Park over the past 4 years. \nThe exhibit will be on display in the Gores Pavilion in Irwin Park until November 3\, 2019.  A closing reception will be held on Friday\, October 18th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. The Gores Pavilion is open Friday-Sunday 11 am – 3 pm\, or by appointment. She was the Executive Co-Director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan\, CT\, a curator in the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Paintings and Drawings Departments\, and a researcher in the Paintings Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has curated numerous exhibitions and her published work includes a book on Jan Brueghel the Elder\, articles on old master painting\, exhibition catalogues of contemporary Cuban art\, and two children’s books on New Canaan architecture and history. \nCommon Ground: Irwin reflects York’s love of Irwin Park. “To me it feels like an outdoor museum with a rotating collection\,” she says.  “This park is a manageable size to circle completely on each visit so it is very satisfying to track changes in nature from one day to the next.  There is a new discovery around each bend in your path.”  \nThe photographs taken over the past four years emphasize the changing palette of the seasons and represent her experience of a specific place.  For this reason\, she includes the GPS coordinates in the title of each photograph.  “I create these compositions from my field of view at these particular points.  A shallow depth of field can only be examined through the camera lens.”   \nYork has exhibited locally and nationally. She was awarded a Connecticut Artist Fellowship grant from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism. She has had solo shows at Silvermine Arts Center Galleries\, New Canaan\, CT; ROOM\, Greenwich\, CT; New Canaan Library; Dow’s Gallery\, Snowmass\, CO\, among others. As the recipient of the Grand Prize\, Images 2013 exhibit at the Fairfield Museum & History Center\, she was awarded a one-person show at Southport Galleries\, Southport\, CT.  Recent group shows: American Splendour\, Ilon Gallery\, Harlem\, NY; Rotations: Gallery Highlights\, Littlejohn Contemporary\, NYC\, NY; and Woodstock Squared 2019\, Center for Photography at Woodstock\, NY. \nYork\, a New Canaan resident\, is thrilled to be exhibiting in the Pavilion\, the mid-century modern building designed by the architect Landis Gores.  “The architectural design creates an experience that I often hope to generate in my photographs – a feeling of discovering an opening or light-filled space beyond a foreground obstacle.” \nPhoto caption: N41º08.949’ W073º30.589’ 10/3/18 365 ft.\n(Irwin Cosmos) 23”x 23”. \n
