DESCRIPTION:The New Canaan Men’s Club will learn about geothermal energy’s potential as a source of green energy in remarks Jan 17 by Skip Hobbs\, the founder of a petroleum and mining geotechnical consulting firm based in town and a well-known advocate for energy conservation.\nIn a talk titled\, “Harnessing Vulcan’s Might – An Overview of Geothermal Energy\,” Hobbs refers to the Roman god of fire to describe the geology of hydrothermal resources\, ways to develop the resource\, the technical and economic barriers and the difference between traditional and newer technologies.\nThe Men’s Club meets at Morrill Hall in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church\, 111 Oenoke Ridge\, beginning at 10 a.m. with Hobbs expected to speak around 10:40 a.m.\nHobbs is managing partner of Ammonite Resources\, an international consultancy on petroleum and mineral resources\, comprised of a staff of 24 geologists\, geophysicists\, engineers and analysts.\nPreviously\, he served as president of the American Geological Institute and on the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. He has a master’s degree in petroleum geology from Imperial College London and a bachelor’s degree\, also in geology\, from Yale University.\nThe Men’s Club welcomes new members.
