Firefighters Put Out Early-Morning Blaze Tuesday at Hemlock Hill Road Home

Firefighters before dawn Tuesday put out a blaze that started in the basement of a northern New Canaan home, officials said. No one was injured in the fire at 50 Hemlock Hill Road, according to Fire Marshal Fred Baker. The New Canaan Fire Department at 2:45 a.m. was called to the Colonial on a report of smoke in the basement, according to Baker. The homeowners had been alerted to the problem by their dog and fire alarm system, in that order, Baker said in a press bulletin issued to local media. “Using thermal imaging cameras, firefighters found a small fire burning behind a wall in the finished basement which was quickly extinguished with minimal damage,” Baker said.

And when the prevention is as easy as installing and maintaining smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors it becomes more ironic. The cause of a fire that consumed a South Avenue barn late Sunday, drawing multiple rescue personnel to New Canaan near the Darien line, remains under investigation, officials say. Nothing of value had been stored in the 1,472-square-foot barn at 986 South Ave., according to New Canaan Fire Marshal Fred Baker. “There is no assumption of foul play,” Baker told NewCanaanite.com in an email. The barn did have power running to it from the main house, he said. The house and a small cottage, both 1790-built structures, suffered no damage during the fire, though the barn appears to be a total loss, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey.

New Canaan and area firefighters battled a barn fire late Sunday at a South Avenue property near the Darien town line. At about 7:43 p.m. Sunday, New Canaan Fire Department members, career and volunteer, raced to the blaze at 986 South Ave. No one was hurt in the fire, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey. Its cause is under investigation, he said. The 2-acre property includes the barn as well as a 1790-built house and cottage, tax records show.

When she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in March 2011—soon to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and two surgeries for a lumpectomy—Karen Tiani Hussey felt that she needed to do something for herself. The 1983 New Canaan High School graduate’s friends knew that she had breast cancer, but didn’t truly understand how she felt while fighting the disease. Soon she heard about a two-day retreat in upstate Connecticut for women in all stages of breast cancer. “For me, it was life-changing,” Tiani recalled on a recent morning, one of about 20 people including several New Canaan firefighters gathered outside Town Hall and wearing pink ‘Casting for Recovery’ T-shirts during a mini-rally for this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “The camaraderie among the women.
