New Canaan Firefighters To Visit Public Schools for Safety Demos

Each year, more than 2,500 people die in fires, most of them in residential occupancies. National Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14 this year and the theme is “Every Second Counts – Plan Two Ways Out!” and the Fire Service throughout the country will be working to emphasize fire safety awareness as will the New Canaan Fire Department. Firefighters will be visiting schools throughout town giving demonstrations on how to stay fire safe. Also, school groups will be touring the fire house to learn about how the fire fighters live, train and work. The kitchen is the most common room in the home for a fire to start—usually related to cooking however, unsafe ash disposal is also a reoccurring problem.

Chief: Fire at Silver Ridge Road Home Causes Significant Damage; Minor Injury to New Canaan Firefighter

A New Canaan firefighter sustained a minor injury Saturday evening while fighting a blaze that caused significant damage to a Silver Ridge Road home. Nobody was home at the time the fire was reported by a passerby at 5 p.m., according to a press release from New Canaan Fire Department Chief Jack Hennessey. The fire caused significant damage to the first floor of the home at 48 Silver Ridge Road, smoke and heat damage to the second floor and water damage to the basement, according to the press release. New Canaan Police were first on scene and confirmed there was nobody at home, Hennessey said. The fire was brought under control with mutual aid assistance from the Norwalk, Wilton and Vista, N.Y. Fire Departments, he said.

New Canaan Marks Anniversary of 9/11 with Memorial Ceremony on Front Lawn of Town Hall

Robin Gestal, vice president of the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, was in midtown Manhattan on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. A safe distance from the World Trade Center, she made it home to her family that same day. Here, officials alerted New Canaan’s emergency medial service that it needed personnel in New York City. “Our EMTs gathered at headquarters,” Gestal recalled on Monday morning, addressing a crowd of residents, police, fellow EMTs, town officials and municipal workers gathered on the front lawn of Town Hall for New Canaan’s annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

The $136 ticket for having an off-leash dog in a park—a violation of local ordinances—includes a $90 fine and $46 in state processing fees. ***

The town’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is to be held on the front lawn of Town Hall on Monday, Sept. 11. The community will start to gather at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremony that officially starts at 9:59 a.m.

Car Crash at Main and Cherry After Motorist Appears To Run Red Light

A motorist traveling up Main Street into town on Wednesday night collided with another vehicle at the Cherry Street intersection, officials said. Eastbound traffic on Cherry was halted briefly following the 7:13 p.m. crash. New Canaan Police on scene said a woman operating a black Toyota Prius traveling northbound on Main Street appeared to have run a red light at the busy intersection, colliding with a Volkswagen operated by a man and attempting to pass through it. The New Canaan Fire Department and New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded. The driver of the Prius was being treated on the scene by EMTs.
