A Mercedes and BMW were reported stolen last week from driveways on a short dead-end street opposite the Country Club of New Canaan, police said.

At about 11:33 a.m. on June 2, officers were dispatched to a Brookwood Lane home to investigate a report of a stolen BMW X5, Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said in a press release.

The vehicle was locked, according to the owner, who was unsure whether the keys were in the vehicle, the release said. Inside the vehicle were car seats, dry cleaning, kid’s toys, a tool kit and a pair of sneakers, it said. The BMW was recovered at 3:39 p.m. that day at an Interstate 95 rest area in Fairfield, according to Krolikowski.

At about 7:53 a.m. on June 3, a Brookwood Lane resident called police to report a that a Mercedes GL550 had been stolen from the driveway, the chief said. The vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside, and about $150,000 had been left inside, according to police. Those items included $30,000 in jewelry, $20,000 camera, designer clothing, $1,000 cash and a laptop.

The Mercedes was later recovered by the Waterbury Police Department. It wasn’t clear whether or how many of the items inside the Mercedes were stolen.

Through April, New Canaan Police reported, 14 cars had been stolen throughout New Canaan, compared to six in the same period one year ago. There also were 16 thefts from vehicles through April of this year, compared to 15 one year ago, police said.

  1. Michael could you please update this article to read —A Brookwood Lane resident invited criminals to their doorstep and offered them a beautiful Mercedes GL550. The offering had been left unlocked with the keys inside to make it clear that it was this vehicle the crooks were being offered. The thoughtful resident wanted to make sure that the crooks had plenty of bling to wear while driving so a generous gift $30 grand in jewelry and designer clothing was provided to the well-deserving thieves. To record the trip the crooks were furnished with $20,000 camera to document their misadventures. To make sure that this gift would last forever our giving resident gave up their laptop that contained a treasure trove of personal data, unsecured documents and information. —

How many times does this have to happen.
We are all victims of these events, and it continues to reinforce to the criminal element that New Canaan is a town walking around with a sign on its back that says “steal from me”

  2. My guess is that there might not have been $30,000 in jewelry nor a $20,000 camera in the car. Sounds like something from an insurance claim made after the fact…

  3. Lou, that’s so funny and so right. New Canaanites do not seem to realize that they are raising insurance rates for their town due to their bad behavior. Their laziness affects us all with our comprehensive insurance premiums.
