SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with Tom Davies: 60 Years in the Art World. Stories\, Lessons\, Tips and Suggestions
DESCRIPTION:Bring your sandwich\, soup\, or snack and come to the Museum for our monthly Lunch & Learn. This month the topic is art collecting. We will take a look into a 60 year pursuit navigating the sometimes bewildering (and on rare occasions questionable ethics) but always fascinating world of American Art. The art market has often been called the world’s largest unregulated business. Tom Davies\, who has presented several times at the Museum since 2017\, began his adventures in 1965 and will share with us his experiences and what he has learned. This presentation will appeal where you are a collector\, thinking about starting a collection or just love a good story grounded in real life experiences. \n

SUMMARY:Public Workshop on Affordable Housing Options
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan’s Affordable Housing Committee (AHC) encourages all interested residents to attend a public workshop on May 19 at 7pm at Lapham Community Center. The workshop will focus on possible future sites for Town-developed Affordable Housing. \nFormed in 2023\, the bipartisan AHC was appointed by the Board of Selectmen and tasked with a specific mission: to research and recommend paths for New Canaan to control its own affordable housing destiny and not risk ceding that power to developers and the state. The way to obtain and maintain that control is to keep New Canaan in moratoria (pauses granted under Connecticut Statute 8-30g)\, which are earned when a town proves it is building or converting enough Affordable Housing on its own to eliminate the need for state or developer intervention. \nThe recent public debates over proposed projects at Weed & Elm and Hill Street have brought attention to issues surrounding Connecticut Statute 8-30g and the need for New Canaan residents and their elected leaders to plan for a future that protects local control of housing. \nWorkshop: \nAt the May 19 workshop\, the AHC will present possible development options\, followed by \nsmall-group discussions of the scenarios during which residents will be encouraged to \nprovide feedback on the pros and cons of each. Please plan to attend! \nNext Steps: \nCan’t make the public workshop? An online community survey will follow the workshop so all residents can weigh in. After compiling and analyzing the results\, the AHC will make a \nrecommendation to the Board of Selectman based on the Committee’s work and public \npreferences. \nAffordable Housing\, as legally defined by Statute 8-30g\, is a complex subject! Please see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at https://www.newcanaan.info/government/committees/faqs.php to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges. \nFor more information about the AHC’s work and past and future meetings\, go \nto https://www.newcanaan.info/government/committees/affordable_housing.php \nYou can reach the Committee by email at: AHCDistribution@newcanaanct.gov \n

SUMMARY:Historic Grainger + Peony Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:As part of the national commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary\, The Glass House will\, for the first time\, open the 1783 Grainger House and its celebrated peony and iris garden for public tours. The house sits on one of New Canaan’s earliest registered land parcels and was originally known as the Finch House\, named for the early New Canaan family who farmed the land. \nPurchased in 1990 by David Whitney\, partner of Philip Johnson\, the house has been carefully restored to its 18th-century form. Whitney furnished the home with significant modernist art and design\, elements that remain on view today\, including a striking window etching by artist Michael Heizer. He also created a remarkable garden\, planting a rare collection of perennial peonies and irises\, and installing a sculpture by artist Alessandro Twombly. \nTogether\, the house and garden vividly illustrate the dialogue between early American architectural traditions and the 20th-century art and design that define The Glass House \n

SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:The Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run started in 1981 as a way for law enforcement to become active in the community and to support Special Olympics by carrying the Flame of Hope throughout every state. Each year\, 97\,000 law enforcement officers participate in the run\, passing the torch off from town to town. Friday June 5th\, 2026 will be the day of New Canaan’s portion of the Law Enforcement Torch Run going through New Canaan and starting at 7:00 am\, NCPD will be set up at the Pop Up Park (area right outside of Dunkin’ Donuts) to sell merchandise as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Connecticut prior to the run kicking off from here at 9:15 am.
