SUMMARY:America 250: Visions and Voices Exhibit Opening Reception at The Norwalk Art Space
DESCRIPTION:As we commemorate 250 years of America\, it is important to reflect not only on how we arrived here\, but on the ideals and aspirations that continue to shape the nation. Throughout our history\, artists have played a vital role in giving voice to how we see\, question\, remember\, and understand our times and the complexities of American life. \nConsider Diego Rivera’s WPA-era murals\, which portrayed industrial labor as both triumph and a site of struggle; Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series\, which captured movement as survival in the face of systemic violence; or Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial\, a sparse and powerful meditation on war\, loss\, and collective grief. Even Norman Rockwell\, not often framed as a political artist\, confronted the realities of racism and civil rights in The Problem We All Live With (1964)\, transforming a single child’s journey into an enduring image of courage and injustice. \nThe artists featured in American 250: Visions and Voices: Sachin Pannuri\, Susan Clinard\, Mateo Gutierrez\, Scott Schuldt\, Margaret Roleke\, and Rick Shaefer\, continue this tradition. Their works grapple with the tensions\, urgencies\, and uncertainties of contemporary America. They refuse to be silent. They reject complacency. They reflect\, question\, and illuminate the social\, political\, and emotional realities of the present moment\, and challenge us all to make a better America. \n

SUMMARY:Open Arts Studio: Architectural Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Let imagination take the lead in this hands-on design adventure! Inspired by Dancing Trees\, our new seating in the plaza\, and our theme We All Build\, children will explore how ideas become real by using fun architectural drawing tools to create their own one-of-a-kind designs. \nChildren will sketch\, experiment\, and bring big ideas to life using chalk on blue paper — just like creating a real blueprint from the past. It’s a playful way to learn how architects imagine\, plan\, and build the world around us. \nOpen Arts Studio is a site-specific creative exploration for younger audiences to engage in open-ended inquiry and reflect on the building\, its shapes and designs\, and its ideas. This ongoing series\, offered weekly\, is led by Grace Farms Arts Educator Nancy Jameson. Recommended for ages 4-11 with adult caregivers. \n

SUMMARY:The Nature of Gardening at the New York Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:The New York Botanical Garden is a vital link between the preservation of historic\, picturesque landscapes and the development of sustainable future cities. Just as it preserves legacy designs\, including the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden and other spaces that highlight the work of early 20th-century landscape designers such as Beatrix Farrand and Marian Coffin\, over the last 20 years it has restored approximately 150 acres of landscape while completely changing its gardening practices to balance horticultural beauty with environmental responsibility. Todd Forrest\, Head of Horticulture at NYBG will discuss NYBG’s role as a National Historic Landmark\, and provide insight into how thoughtfully designing\, planting\, and tending great gardens might be our most effective approach to repairing the damage we have done to nature. We are pleased to present this program in recognition of America 250. \n

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with Nick Williams: On the Musical "1776"- Fact or Fiction?
DESCRIPTION:Bring your sandwich\, soup or snack and join us for a Lunch & Learn with Nick Williams as he explores the Declaration of Independence through the lens of the Tony Award-winning Broadway Musical and Movie “1776 .”🎬. The musical dramatizes the debates and events leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. \nThe show\, which premiered in 1969\, focuses on the political struggles of the Second Continental Congress\, particularly John Adams’ effort to persuade delegates to declare Independence from Britain. The story follows Adams and his cohorts\, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin\, as they debate and work towards that independence\, culminating in the signing of the Declaration. \nPeter Stone wrote the book\, focusing on the arguments and intrigue within the Continental Congress. Sherman Edwards\, a composer who researched the American Revolution for years\, wrote the music and lyrics. The musical won five Tony Awards in 1969\, including Best Musical and Best Book. A film version was released in 1972\, with the original stars reprising their roles. \nNick will exhibit several musical numbers from the show\, and will discuss where it is true to history\, where it takes some liberties for dramatic effect and the implications of 1776 from a historical perspective. \n
