Family Craft Day at New Canaan Library Celebrates the Beauty of Papua New Guinea

Saturday, March, 18, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Papua New Guinea, the setting of Lily King’s Euphoria, is alive with exotic wildlife, flora and fauna. The Library invites all ages to create, explore, discover and just have fun at a hands-on crafting afternoon centered on the natural wonders of Papua New Guinea. The event takes place on Saturday, March 18 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room. Please register to attend, online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
The afternoon event will offer a number of different activities; participants are welcome to try one or all. Included will be a station to make a unique, Papua New Guinea themed silk screened tote bag with the One Book logo. Masks are a big part of the Papua New Guinea culture, so attendees can learn about that aspect while making a colorful, personalized mask and decorating it with markers, glitter and cut outs.
Don’t miss the Salad Spinner Art station, where participants will use a salad spinner to create a vibrant piece of artwork reminiscent of the exotic rainbow eucalyptus tree, pictured on the Euphoria cover. Barbara Rucci, local art teacher, creator of the popular blog Art Bar, and author of Art Workshop for Children will lead this craft activity. Barbara will also lead the fun “Sock Snakes of New Guinea” craft, where friendly, colorful sock snakes that mimic the unique snakes of Papua New Guinea will be created by stuffing socks and decorating with eyes, scales, stripes and more!
