Q&A: ‘New Canaan Artisans’ Seeks New Members

One of the town’s best-established nonprofit organizations, the New Canaan Artisans—here on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest—is seeking new members as it gears up for a June 4 sale that benefits local charities. We connected with member Barbara Faris to get more information on the group.

What follows is our exchange (those interested in learning more can visit the New Canaan Artisans website or email the organization at newcanaanartisans@gmail.com):

New Canaanite: Please give us some background on the New Canaan Artisans group. When was it formed and under what circumstances? Barbara Faris: In 1931 a small group of women gathered together to sew layettes, nightgowns and clothing for families under the care of the Visiting Nurses Association. By the mid ‘30s they branched out into other creations, and made things such as hand knits, needlepoint, aprons, bed jackets, et cetera.

Podcast: New Canaan Artisans

This week, on 0684-Radi0, our free podcast (subscribe here in the iTunes Store), we talk to Sue Scannell, a member for 20-plus years of the New Canaan Artisans. A nonprofit organization that’s been active since 1931, the New Canaan Artisans includes sewing, knitting and paper craft groups that produce not only clothes and accessories but also painting, jewelry and other crafts. This spring, after raising money at its biennial sales and at the Farmer’s Market, the organization gave away $24,000 in grants to 11 deserving local agencies. New Canaan Artisans can be reached via email at newcanaanartisans@gmail.com.

Letter: Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County Thanks New Canaan Artisans

Dear Mike,

On behalf of our board, staff, volunteers, and especially the patients and families we serve, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the New Canaan Artisans for their most generous gift of $4,100 to support the hospice and palliative care programs of Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County. Our hospice program provides care to individuals and their families who are facing the end of life. Our palliative care program provides services to those who are coping with serious or life-limiting illness while they continue to pursue active treatment. With help from this generous charitable donation from the New Canaan Artisans, our non-profit agency is able to provide comfort to improve the quality of life for those in our care, focusing on the reduction of symptoms as well as providing emotional and spiritual support to our patients and their families. The New Canaan Artisans is a treasure in our community.
