AAUW 39th Annual Book Author Luncheon

Thursday, April, 19, 2018 @ 11:15 am - 2:00 pm

$65.

The New Canaan branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold its 39th Book & Author Luncheon on Thursday, April 19 starting at 11:15 AM at the Woodway Country Club in Darien. The event is co-sponsored by Elm Street Books. Books will be sold before and after the luncheon and speakers.

Our three featured authors and their books are:

“With You There is Light” by Alexandra Lehmann
This historical novel novel is based on the true-life story of Sophie Scholl and Fritz Hartnagel, two young Germans in WWII. As a founding member of the White Rose student resistance in Munich in 1942, Sophie helped write, produce, and distribute
thousands of anti-Nazi leaflets. Her boyfriend, Fritz, forced to serve in Hitler’s army, wrote to Sophie of German Army and SS atrocities he witnessed. Theirs is a timeless love story of two courageous individuals caught on opposite sides of war.
“Something Beautiful Happened: A Story of Survival and Courage in the Face of Evil” by
Yvette Manessis Corporon
Yvette Manessis Corporon grew up listening to her grandmother’s stories about how the people of Erikousa, a small Greek island, hid a Jewish family named Savvas from the
Nazis during WWII. The family survived the war because no one on the island ever gave them up. Seventy years later, the author set out to track down the family’s
descendants, and eventually found them in Israel. Soon after, her own family suffered a hate-driven tragedy – the killing of a cousin’s son by a neo-Nazi in Kansas. She discovers a new way to understand tragedy, forgiveness, and the power of kindness.

“Connecticut Icons: 50 Symbols of the Nutmeg State” by Charles Monagan
Charles Monagan knows Connecticut. He has spent years discovering and describing the people, places, and things that comprise the character of his home state, With this
entertaining collection of photos, anecdotes, and little known facts, he presents 50 of his favorite icons – from the hot lobster roll to the Yale Bowl, the U.S.S. Nautilus to the Merritt Parkway – and reveals to natives and newcomers alike the independent spirit and local pride at the heart of the great state of Connecticut.

Copies of these books will be available at the luncheon for purchase.
