Ruth Anne Gutt, artist, loving wife, mother, gardener, home designer, cook,
writer, dog handler, and naturalist.
Ruth died peacefully in her home on August 20th, 2024 at the age of 96.
Ruth is survived by her five children, Marla, Mark, Karen, Christian,Tommy;
their wives Lisa, Pascale and Cydny; her grandchildren Valentine, Louise,
Elyssa, Lilah; and her great granddaughter Maia.
Ruth was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania February 17th, 1928. where she
established strong relationships with neighborhood dogs and local turtles
and began her lifelong love of trees. In third grade she was selected to
study art at Carnegie Tech.
When she told her father she wanted to be an artist he said, Ruthie you can
be a nurse, a secretary, a stewardess or a teacher. She decided to become
a nurse and did her training at Shadyside Nursing Hospital. During the
Korean war she served as an Air Force nurse in Tripoli. During her service
she was personally selected to serve the Queen of Libya. This is also where
she met the love of her life, Edwin Frank Gutt who was an Air Force pilot
and later became the Administrative Officer for the town of New Canaan.
Ed and Ruth enjoyed a long happy marriage of 55 years. Their romantic
beginnings are beautifully evoked in her novel/memoir titled Will the Real
World Please Stand Up, which she wrote in 1970 at her bedroom desk in
between paintings, discovering sculpture, and raising five kids.
She was a artist – creating over __ sculptures and many watercolors, oils
and pastels. She studied at Silvermine Guild, and also in Florence italy.
She said she wanted to make her own art eternal. In this quest, she went to
Egypt to see the Pyramids and the Art of the Antiquities.
She sold many pieces locally and won countless prizes.
Late in life she also became a dog handler for a champion Australian
Terrier, her beloved Dante, who won best in breed at the Westminster Dog
Show at Madison Square Garden.Throughout this time she raised her five children with great love and
devotion, giving each of them an emblematic gift to support their core
wishes as she guided them to deeply develop their unique individual lives.
She fostered many close friendships, caring deeply for all the people who
cared for her, including her personal caregiver Marcia Horrobin. Ruth
taught us all the value of this care and reciprocity. She advocated for caring
for our planet earth, and being kind to each other and to all living things.
She often said, “I don’t worry.” and “Just laugh!” All of us who were lucky to
know her will carry on her message of love, compassion, kindness, and joy.
