Y Closes ‘Valles Pool’ As Roof Project Gets Underway, Winter Reopening Possible with Summer ‘27 Completion Date

A widely anticipated project to repair and restore a heavily used swimming and diving pool at the New Canaan YMCA is underway, officials say, with the first phase of “shoring” the facility expected to be completed by late November. The Y expects to reopen the Valles Pool—a 46-year-old facility in need of repairs—for this winter, though “we will need to make sure this can be done in a safe way with adequate space around the shoring,” according to Executive Director Margaret Riley. “Phase Two will include the actual roof repair work, which cannot begin until the risk of winter weather has passed,” Riley told NewCanaanite.com in an email in response to questions about the project. “We’ll be using the winter months to complete planning, permitting, bids, and material sourcing. It’s anticipated that the project will be completed and the Valles Pool will be reopened next summer.”

‘Hands for Life New Canaan’ To Be Held April 28 at the YMCA [Q&A]

The New Canaan YMCA’s “Hands for Life” training—a free event presented in partnership with New Canaan EMS and CERT—will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 at the Y.

Open to all and with no advance registration required, the life-saving skills of hands-only CPR and AED use takes just 20 minutes. It was last offered in 2013, where more than 900 people were trained. We put some questions about the event to Margaret Riley, executive director at the New Canaan YMCA, and Amy Kennedy, chief of New Canaan EMS.
