Ultramarathon Training in New Canaan

This year I am giving up politics for Lent. In lieu of complaining about local government, I want to share a ‘Thank you’ note to the New Canaanites helping me prep for my upcoming ultramarathon. This was not a New Year’s resolution (one-month survival rate: 64%). I just want to make some changes this year. My plan was to compete in an ultramarathon scheduled for late June with six months to prepare.

Embody Opens Second New Canaan Location Inside Oxygen Fitness

More than one year after opening its New Canaan store on Forest Street, Embody Fitness Gourmet is launching a second “satellite” location inside a hugely popular boutique wellness and fitness facility across town. At the new location at Oxygen Fitness on Pine Street, Embody will sell its signature protein shakes and juices, as well as a “good selection” of gourmet salads and snacks, according to founder and owner Gillen Bryan. “We know Oxygen has a great reputation and certainly a lot of the members and instructors had already come to us, so when we talked to [Oxygen Fitness owners] David and Sara [Koch] about taking over to provide a great offering at Oxygen, it wasn’t really a tough decision,” Bryan said. The public will be able to access the Oxygen Fitness store directly inside the Pine Street facility’s main doors, with a soft opening this week and a Grand Opening later in the month, he said. Sara Koch said the introduction of Embody at Oxygen’s expanding “fitness campus” was designed to bring more options to members and others.

The photos from our gallery this week are from a party honoring town resident Dick DePatie after 19 years as parish administrator at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Congratulations to Dick and the DePaties! The March 17 ‘DePatie DeParty’ in Morrill Hall featured musical numbers, including from a ukulele band. ***

Officer Allyson Halm of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section this week will begin making door-to-door visits to residents who have been unresponsive to calls to renew their dogs’ licenses.

A Darien-New Canaan tussle played out ahead of this week’s highly anticipated Turkey Bowl, and just a few football fields away from Dunning Stadium. At about 1 p.m. on Nov. 11, a 4-year-old miniature Australian shepherd from New Canaan attacked an 18-month-old Vizsla from Darien at Spencer’s Run, the dog park at Waveny. The local dog bit the puppy’s earflap and did enough damage to require stitching, according to a report on file with the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department. “All in all, Spencer’s Run as a rule runs very, very smoothly,” said Officer Allyson Halm, head of Animal Control.

The town is seeking to settle an appeal filed by the owners of a Lukes Wood Road home after the Planning & Zoning Commission last year denied their request to allow higher-than-allowed pillars for a gate at the end of their driveway. At a special meeting of P&Z on Sept. 22, town attorney Ira Bloom said that under a “reasonable compromise” reached with the town, the pillars—which already are in place at 309 Lukes Wood Road and stand about six and seven feet above grade, given the slope of the land, against the four feet allowed by the New Canaan Zoning Regulations (see Section 6.5.C.3.a on page 126 here)—will remain. However, Aris and Patricia Kekedjian have agreed to move certain trees, replant others, forego installing any fixtures atop the pillars and remove an upper piece of their driveway gate, Bloom said. P&Z commissioner Jack Flinn called the plan “more than adequate” during the meeting, held at Town Hall, and the commission voted unanimously to support it.
