New Canaan Police at 5:38 p.m. on Nov. 15 euthanized a coyote that had been struck by a car in the area of Oenoke Ridge and Logan Road. At 12:50 p.m. the following day, police pursued a sick coyote on Butler Lane but the animal ran off before authorities could capture and kill it.

New Canaan High School Principal Bill Egan on Wednesday emailed the NCHS community regarding a scam attempt. A caller calling himself ‘Frank Kramer’ offered to “send a flash drive and other test prop materials” to a student’s home. Yet the number was not in service (police have been notified). Egan noted that the district has partnered with Carnegie Test Prep “should your family be seeking a reputable test prep company.”

The Town Clerk’s office on Nov. 13 received notice from Nationwide insurance that the company was seeking to recoup $1,438.82 because a tree branch fell on the night of Aug. 16 (a Friday) atop an insured Ford Explorer, damaging its windshield, side mirror and passenger-side door. It happened on Oenoke Ridge, Nationwide said in a letter to the town. A police report corroborated the information.

Police at 11:51 a.m. Monday arrested a 47-year-old Bridgeport man and charged him with second-degree failure to appear. He’d been arrested by New Canaan Police in August 2021 and January 2022, both times on multiple motor vehicle-related charges, according to Connecticut Judicial Branch records. He was released on $10,000 bond and scheduled to appear Nov. 29 in state Superior Court.

The town since July has spent $12,706.18 in legal fees putting together its $4 million loan to the New Canaan Housing Authority for the agency’s $75 million acquisition of the Avalon property on Lakeview Avenue, according to a legal bill that the Board of Selectmen approved Tuesday.

New Canaan resident Cathy Kangas, founder of an animal welfare foundation, has said the organization’s next major goal is to establish “a much-needed animal shelter in New Canaan.” (The current facility is a converted incinerator building at the dump, described by a former Animal Control officer as “decrepit.”) The foundation is “actively seeking a generous donor to provide land or a building to make this vision a reality,” according to a press release. Kangas said in the release: “We are in such a wealthy town, we are so blessed, we should have a fabulous dog shelter and sanctuary right here.”

The New Canaan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the nonprofit organization’s Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, celebrated its 130th anniversary Oct. 27 at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. Chapter Regent Susan Boston accepted a town proclamation from New Canaan First Selectman Dionna Carlson (a member of the chapter) that congratulated the organization on its milestone of service. Chapter members and guests, including state Sen. Ryan Fazio (R-36th), Connecticut DAR State Regent Lisa Melland, and past Chapter Regent Karen Elmasry were in attendance.
