The New Canaan Land Trust’s Summer Stewards interns worked hard at Bristow Bird Sanctuary this year, taking on a variety of important conservation tasks—cleaning bird boxes, installing bat boxes, restocking the Little Free Library, maintaining bird feeders, and tending to the Cam Hutchins Pollinator Garden by planting, weeding, and spreading mulch. Now in its tenth year, the Summer Steward Internship program offers three three-week sessions, during which interns are paid for their contributions. In addition to supporting Land Trust properties, the interns also help care for the Bristow Bird Sanctuary, which the Land Trust helps steward.

Here’s a write-up submitted by town resident Claire Foster on New Canaan girls competing in the Artistic Swimming Junior Olympics as part of the New Canaan Aquianas team:

New Canaan Aquianas Youth (13-15) Team celebrating with their ribbons after the Parade of Athletes Ceremony.

“This summer, 22 female athletes (including 10 New Canaanites) competed in the Artistic Swimming Junior Olympics in Arlington, Texas. Representing the 12U (12 and under), Youth (13-15), and Junior (15-18) teams of the New Canaan Aquianas (NCA), the athletes came home with lots of top ten finishes and personal successes to celebrate. The Junior Olympics is an annual, national meet at which all of the best teams, having qualified in their respective Zones, gather to compete.

“Highlights include 12U Solo Free: 6th and 9th; 12U Duet Free: 12th; 12U Team Free: 6th; Youth Solo Free: 5th; Youth Duet Free: 9th; Youth Team Free: 10th; Youth Team Combo: 7th; Junior Solo Free: 10th; Junior Duet Tech: 2nd; Junior Tech Team: 5th; Junior Acro Team: 9th.

“The New Canaan Aquianas is an independent, not-for-profit artistic swimming team with a 50-year history practicing in New Canaan. NCA boasts 34 U.S. National Team members, 7 U.S. National Team Assistant Coaches, and this year received the Junior National Overall High-point Trophy at U.S. Junior Nationals, showing the depth and strength of our team. This is the first time NCA has earned this high honor. For the past 30 years the top two west coast teams have traded holding this distinction. In addition, the Junior Coach Of The Year award was given to NCA’s own Laura Mase, who has been part of the Aquianas family for 34 years as both a swimmer herself and coach. NCA Program Director, Sandra Valles Mahoney, has been part of the Aquianas family, also as a swimmer and coach, for 42 years.

“We are currently recruiting for our 25-26 season! Please visit our website for more information on our intro classes, pre-team, and team programs for kids of all ages. We need the community’s support to continue this legacy. Click here to learn more and how to donate: https://www.ncaquianas.org/.”
