Police on Tuesday arrested a 35-year-old Stamford man by warrant in connection with a pre-dawn car crash in New Canaan last month.
At about 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 30—a Saturday—officers were dispatched to Trinity Pass Road on a report of a vehicle that had flipped over and was in the roadway with the driver possible trapped inside, police said.
Arriving at that part of Trinity Pass Road, west of Ponus Ridge and just beyond a sharp curve, authorities found the motorist standing outside the car, according to a police report.
He told them he had been traveling westbound on Trinity Pass Road when he lost control while negotiating a sharp curve, the report said.
The motorist also said that he phoned 9-1-1 to report the crash and that he had lost control when looking down at his cellphone, it said.
The New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Stamford Hospital for evaluation, police said.
An investigation determined that the vehicle left about 126 feet of skid marks on Trinity Pass Road—speed limit 25 mph—before crashing into a utility pole and guardrail, the report said.
Police charged him with reckless driving. The man turned himself in to police at 4:07 p.m. on Jan. 23.
He was released on $1,000 bond and scheduled to appear Feb. 5 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
