A live bat found Jan. 9 on the floor of a Canoe Hill Road home tested positive for rabies, officials said. Though mammals are meant to be hibernating just now, the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department has already sent 10 bats to a state laboratory for testing—it isn’t clear why they’ve been so active.

Police at 12:35 a.m. on Jan. 28 cited a 23-year-old Westport man for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding after an officer on patrol clocked him traveling 40 mph on Ponus Ridge in a 25 mph zone. The officer found the pot and smoking gear in the driver’s car during a stop.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to hire Michel Schiano as an equipment operator with the DPW. New Canaan’s human resources director, Cheryl Pickering-Jones, said Schiano was one of 55 applicants and 11 candidates interviewed.

Congratulations to 2014 NCHS graduate Kit Mallozzi, who just earned her place on the Dean’s List at Syracuse University for the seventh straight semester. Mallozzi, who as a high school senior here won a Student Leadership Award from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, also was one of four Orangemen nominated as Newhouse scholars.
