If you could, what would you like to ask the candidates running for New Canaan First Selectman and Board of Education?

On October 23, 2023, the League of Women Voters of New Canaan will sponsor a debate among candidates for the November 7th Municipal Election. The debate will be held in the New Canaan Town Hall Meeting Room beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. and will also be televised live by NCTV Channel 79. The debate will be structured in two parts, with one debate for the role of First Selectman (two candidates) and one debate for the Board of Education (six candidates running for a four-year term and two candidates running for a two-year term). New Canaan voters are invited to submit questions in advance for the candidates and to attend the debate in person. Questions for candidates should be submitted online through the LWV website no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 16th using this link: www.lwvnewcanaan.org.

As organized, the candidates’ debate ensures that each candidate is treated equally, regardless of party affiliation. Questions submitted by voters will be screened by LWV members from both parties, and, when possible, by an unaffiliated member, to ensure clarity, accuracy and that each question can be answered by all candidates for the contested race. As introduced last year, members of the New Canaan High School debate team will assist in reading candidate questions on debate night.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization encouraging informed and active citizen participation in government. The LWV neither supports nor opposes candidates or political parties at any level of government. To promote an informed electorate, the LWV believes voters should have the opportunity to see and hear candidates engage in healthy debates before elections as an important part of our democracy. The LWV also publishes the “Voters Guide,” a candidates guide available digitally on Vote411.org, and mailed in an abbreviated print form to all New Canaan households prior to Election Day.
