Town Council Chair Mike Mauro on Wednesday led the legislative body in a moment of silence in honor of Leo E. Karl, Jr., calling him “a truly amazing member of our community, great contributor to our community, part of the heart and rhythm of our community for almost 100 years.” Mr. Karl “served this community for decades,” Mauro continued. “What an accomplished and distinguished person—a human, a father, a brother, and all the hats that he wore. The heart of a volunteer is truly strong and Mr. Karl was a real fixture in this community for so long, and his loss is a great loss for our town, and obviously for his family.” Mr. Karl’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Aloysius Church, and will be live-streamed here.

The New Canaan Building Department on Jan. 5 issued a permit for about $70,000 of work to be done at 112 Main St., future home of the “Spice & Tea Exchange.” The work includes building partition walls, re-installing a drop ceiling above the “Tea Bar,” and installing an ice machine, hot water dispensers and filter for water supply.

Stand Together Against Racism (S.T.A.R), in partnership with the New Canaan YMCA, held its second annual “Infinite Hope” Community Building event on Monday in the Wagner Room at the New Canaan Y in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Led by S.T.A.R Operating Board members Layla Steed and Jacq Burroughs, more than 60 children and adults participated in arts and crafts and a mind mapping project while watching clips of King’s speeches and listening to King-inspired music. Margaret Riley, executive director at the New Canaan YMCA, said in a press release, “We were thrilled to see so many families from our community join us for this meaningful event, where we celebrated Dr. King’s life and legacy.”

K. Rone Baldwin
Waveny LifeCare Network this week announced the appointment of K. Rone Baldwin as chairman of its Board of Directors for 2024-2025. An active member of the Board since Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County joined the Network in 2021, Baldwin joins newly elected Executive Board members Marian Curtis Blair, Co-Vice Chair; Mary Franco, Co-Vice Chair; Nancy Perez, Secretary; and Dave Hunt, Treasurer. Baldwin is a retired business executive who has spent more than 30 years leading large insurance businesses across a range of enterprises. He was most recently CEO of One Call Care Management, the largest provider of ancillary services to the workers compensation industry. Baldwin has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Amherst College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife Carol live in Weston.
