Laura Newell, Visual and Performing Arts Director at New Canaan Public Schools
Warm welcome to Laura Newell, the new visual and performing arts director at New Canaan Public Schools. She’ll oversee the district’s art, theater, dance, and music instructional program and curriculum for grades K-12. Newell earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from the University of Hartford, and is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from Kansas State University. She received her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (Sixth Year) in educational leadership from the University of Connecticut, and worked most recently as the K-12 arts coordinator at Greenwich Public Schools.

Congratulations to Julina Ogilvie on the publication of her new book, “Money Confident Girls: A Parent’s Roadmap to Raising Financially Confident Children (From Toddlers to Teens).” In it, she shows “how early money lessons and everyday conversations help girls understand the four building blocks of finance: earning, spending, saving, and investing,” according to the book’s description on Elm Street Books. A wealth advisor, speaker, podcast host and author, Ogilvie is married to NCHS grad Doug Ogilvie, and is the daughter-in-law of Peter Ogilvie, former longtime member of the Parking Commission. She manages wealth for high-net-worth individuals and families at Principle Wealth Partners. Prior to joining the firm she held executive roles at J.P. Morgan Asset Management and Lord Abbett & Co. In these roles, she used her extensive knowledge of the capital markets to educate the nation’s top advisors.

New Canaan High School will host Safe Driving Week April 8 to 12. An initiative designed to bring attention to distracted driving from texting to driving under the influence, it will culminate with a car crash reenactment at 11 a.m. on April 12. at NCHS. The school SRO, Officer Jeff Deak, will run it, with other SROs and patrol officers. The NCHS staff, Fire Department, EMS, Highway Department and Parks and Recreation all help support the initiative.
