The Town Tasted Good Thursday Night

The Fifth Annual Taste of the Town on Thursday tickled tastebuds and tempted shoppers as they strolled through downtown, stopping in stores to sample some food (even in stores that don’t sell food) and get a checkoff on their special map to get a chance for a prize. A “Lobster Off” from 5 to 6 p.m., which emcee Chef Plum called a “Lobster Roll Off” had three judges from town pick which food establishment in town made the choicest lobster roll, with five nominees to choose from. The overall winner: Nube Siguenza of Cava restaurant. These other contestants also won prizes:

Sandy Baldanza of Baldanza’s Cafe: “Best Looking Lobster Roll”
Scott Kaluczky, co-owner of Silvermine Market (which plans to offer pizza, starting in September): “Meatiest Lobster Roll”
Justin Sullivan, a chef from Fjord Fish Market: “Most Classic Lobster Roll”
Fish Tales: “Best Balance of Flavors”

The week before the Stroll, Walter Stewart’s Market sold “pre-packaged” bags to donate for $15 and $25 each (they had a retail value of $25 and $40, respectively, and were made available thanks to the local market’s generosity). “Strollers” who spent more than $200 in stores on the evening of the event had a chance to win prizes, including a Grand Prize from Le Boudoir Salon on Main Street.

Town to Spend $275K for a Truck that Sucks: Replaces Vacuum Truck

For many years, New Canaan’s Department of Public Works has been using a vacuum truck consisting of an old plow truck built in 1980 with a vacuum engine built in 1967. Soon, that will be replaced. In its stead, the town is getting a 2016 stainless steel, “top of the line” vacuum truck, said Mose Saccary, the town highway superintendent. The new truck costs $276,121.88, with a trade-in of the current truck of $1,121.88, with the town paying $275,000. The Board of Selectmen at its Tuesday meeting approved the purchase.

Police: Man Suspected of Fraud in Trying to Cash $2,100 Check

New Canaan police say they were called to the Bank of America branch on Elm Street when the bank reported a man suspiciously tried to cash a check, then wasn’t able or willing to prove who he was. Police gave this account, based largely on statements from bank employees:

The man, described as being in his early 20s, entered the bank at 94 Elm St. on Wednesday morning, Aug. 12, sometime before 10:21 a.m. (when police were called). He tried to pass a check for $2,100, but said he didn’t have valid identification.

Town Councilman: Heroin Has Killed Six Young People from New Canaan

In the past 18 to 24 months, five or six young people from New Canaan overdosed and died from heroin, says Town Council Member E. Roger Williams.

The deaths occurred almost entirely outside of town, after the young people had entered their 20s and had moved to places like Wilton, Norwalk and Stamford, Williams said — but he said the introduction into substance abuse tended to happen when the young people were teenagers growing up in this town. “In the last year and a half, we’ve had six of our children die,” Williams said at a Town Council meeting on Wednesday. After the meeting he amended that statement — he meant to say five or six young adults, and the deaths may have started as much as two years ago, he said. He was reluctant to provide any details, citing the embarassment and concerns of the grieving families, but he said the source of his information was a reliable person in the community who had kept count of the deaths. Williams spoke immediately after hearing a brief report from fellow Town Council Member Penny Young, chairman of the council’s Health and Human Services Committee, that town officials and local groups were working in a revived “New Canaan Coalition” to focus on helping the town’s youth.
