The CT Mirror reported Monday that the state House of Representatives passed a bill that likely will help New Canaan claim “leftover” affordable housing units created in the denser redevelopment at Millport Avenue. If passed by the state Senate, the amendment could help the town achieve future relief from the 8-30g affordable housing law. (It will not affect the 8-30g housing projects already under appeal in Hartford following the New Canaan Planning & Zoning Commission’s denials, at Weed and Elm Streets, Hill Street and Main Street.)

First Selectman Dionna Carlson during the May 1 Parking Commission meeting said the town may consider shortening the outdoor dining season in the future in order to address concerns among some business owners regarding the barricades used for the amenity. While it’s currently April through November it may change to May through October, she said.

On Sunday, April 28 320 people learned how to “save a life” by attending the New Canaan EMS’s CPR event “Hands For Life” at the YMCA. “This success would not have been possible without the seamless preparation and cooperation of New Canaan’s EMTs, the YMCA staff, CERT, Sacred Heart University Nursing students and instructors, and many volunteers who gave up so much time to help our community preparedness in a very big way,” organizers say.

At the beginning of the school year in August, Gabriella Brown, a science teacher at South School, submitted a proposal and application for the district to receive a “Moon Tree” from the NASA STEM initiative. After a long review process, South School was notified in mid-April that they were one of the first to be selected to receive a Sycamore Moon Tree seedling. This seedling has traveled into the moon’s orbit aboard the Artemis I space shuttle and now South has the opportunity to continue the growth of the seedling. The seedling was received April 25 and was planted the following day (a fitting event to celebrate Arbor Day) on the south side of the elementary school.

Cobble Court Interiors has launched the Studio Shop, an extension of its interior design business. The Shop is located at 21 South Ave., and carries home furnishings, accessories and gifts as well as providing our interior design services. There’s a launch part scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. on May 16.
