Congratulations to the New Canaan Rams boys basketball team on winning the Holiday Classic tournament on Dec. 29, defeating Shelton 71-64 and Bethel 58-48 for the team’s fifth consecutive win of the event. Scoring in the final game was led by players William Sapione (23 points), Henry Chandra (21 points), and Blue Vertin (14 points), highlighting a strong start to the season. Sapione was named an All-Tournament player, and Chandra was named Tournament MVP. The Rams continue FCIAC play with their next home game against Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m. Friday.

Armed with cedar branches from New Canaan Land Trust properties, John Hutchins and Chris Schipper this week gave the GreenLink bridge between Weed Street and the New Canaan Nature Center a much-needed touch-up. In just over three hours, they replaced 20 pieces of ornamental cedar, with Hutchins wielding a Japanese saw.

Save the date: New Canaan Chamber Music’s next concert is coming Feb. 5 and 6. Titled “Schubert’s Trout Quintet,” it will feature musicians Kevin Zhu (violin), Emma Wernig (viola), Sterling Elliot (cello), Marguerite Cox (double-bass) and Andrew Armstrong (piano), the organization’s founder and artistic director (and a 1992 New Canaan High School graduate).

Congratulations to New Canaan’s Holmes Harden on his upcoming induction into the CT Lacrosse Hall of Fame, on Jan. 24 in Cheshire. A short-stick defensive midfielder as a sophomore on NCHS’s 1986 CT State Championship team, Harden later played for Kent School and earned 1st Team All-New England Prep School honors as a midfielder. He then followed older brothers Boyd and Graham, playing lacrosse at the University of North Carolina, where the team won four straight ACC tournament championships and played in four straight NCAA Final Four weekends from 1990 to 1993. After college, he served as an artillery and infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Harden and his wife Blake live in Alexandria, Va. and have two children, Gwen and Ryan.
