Jeffrey A. O’Connell, fondly known to many as “Coach,” passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.
Jeffrey A. O’Connell
He was 80 years old.
Born on August 17, 1945, in Stamford, Connecticut, to the late Eugene and Muriel O’Connell, Jeff was a lifelong Stamford resident whose life and career left an indelible mark on his community.
The youngest of five children, Jeff was a proud member of the first graduating class of Rippowam High School in 1963. A three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and baseball, his love of athletics shaped his early years and later guided his career in teaching and coaching. He went on to earn a degree in Physical Education from Southern Connecticut State College, where he also played basketball.
For 47 years, Jeff dedicated himself to teaching and coaching in Stamford Public Schools, where his passion for education and mentorship shaped generations of young people. His impact extended far beyond the classroom and gym. For more than 40 years, Jeff was known throughout Fairfield County as “The Picnic Man,” serving countless corporations and community gatherings with his signature egg toss and sack races. For 28 summers, he also brought joy as “General Jeff” at the Italian Center Summer Camp, where his larger-than-life personality created lasting memories for thousands of campers and counselors. In 2024, he was inducted into the Stamford Old Timers Athletic Association, recognizing his lifelong contributions to athletics and youth programs. When he wasn’t working, Jeff cherished life’s simple joys—listening to Doo-Wop music, dancing, and enjoying a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Jeff is survived by his beloved children, Jeffrey Jr. (Minori), Chris (Heather), and Lauren. He shared his life with his devoted partner, Daria Baldyga, and is lovingly remembered by her children, Laina (Kelly) and Jared (Ania). Together, they filled his world with grandchildren he cherished: Archie, Katelyn, Emmy, Carson (“CJ”), Jacob, Emma, Sofia, Jack, Payton, Dylan, and Beau. He leaves behind his brother, Bruce O’Connell, along with his extended family, countless friends, and all whose lives he touched.
He was predeceased in death by his brothers, Richard and Eugene, and his sister, Nancy Moran.
Calling hours will be held on October 11th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902.
