The New Canaan 6th grade girls played a close game against New Fairfield on Saturday.

Quinn McKiernan opened the game with a 3 point shot. A steal from McKiernan and push up the court allowed Chloe Reidy to score with an outside jumper for the team.

Tough defense from Brynne Harris and rebounding from Tyler Towers kept New Canaan ahead by 2 at the end of the first period.

New Fairfield came back and went on a scoring tear at the start of the second quarter.

However, New Canaan didn’t disappoint. Reidy answered with another nice outside shot and Elizabeth St. George drew a shooting foul and converted on the play. Then, Cameron Murphy came up with a steal and scored to tie the game at 10 all going into the half.

Scoring went back and forth between both teams in the third quarter.

Olivia West opened the half with a key offensive rebound that enabled her to put the ball up, draw the foul and score on her free throw.

St. George scored twice both off strong offensive drives to the basket and Murphy would score as well on a long press-breaker pass from McKiernan.

Great defense from Julia Bazata, Harris and Towers would stop New Fairfield from scoring toward the end of the quarter and hold New Canaan’s 3 point lead.

At the start of the fourth, Emma Gibbens grabbed a strong defensive rebound, took the ball down the court and scored to put New Canaan up by 5.

St. George would score again under the basket from an inbound pass from McKiernan.

Consistent defensive pressure from Bazata throughout the fourth quarter kept New Fairfield scoreless and secured New Canaan’s win.
