Author, Historian Hamish Lutris to be Men’s Club speaker

May 17 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Turning to a session on Irish history, the New Canaan Men’s Club will learn about the Vikings’ impact and influence on what is now known as Ireland between the 8th and 11th centuries in a talk May 17 by Hamish Lutris, associate professor of History, Political Science and Geography, at Capital Community College.
In his presentation, “Burned by the Heathens: The Vikings in Ireland,” Lutris will describe how western Scandinavian expansion brought with it both devastation and innovation. Over time, Lutris explains, the Vikings’ impact led to forming the people now known as Irish, causing the Irish Celts to create a more unified government and an armed force aimed at withstanding the Vikings.
The Men’s Club will meet at 10 a.m. in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge. Prof. Lutris will begin his presentation around 10:40 a.m.
Lutris will balance comments about the destruction brought about by the Vikings with the genetic and social influence they had on Ireland, along with the commercial and political impact of their presence.
The Men’s Club has openings for new members, men 55-years old and above. For information, email ncmens@ncmens.club.
