First Presbyterians Are Coming Home

Sunday, September, 11, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

On Sept. 11, 2016 the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan welcomes all to its 10 a.m. worship service and “Coming Home Sunday” festivities. The Rev. Paul E. Gilmore will deliver the sermon, the Adult Choir will sing, and Sunday’s Cool for children in grades K-7 resumes. Following the service, all are invited outside for a picnic. In addition, children can enjoy activities including face painting, carnival games, a bounce house, and an ice cream sundae making station. The day also ushers in a new season of wonderful programs, events and educational offerings.

Music Programs

The Music Ministry at First Presbyterian Church offers music opportunities for children through adults. The children’s Presbyterian Choir School begins Wednesday September 7th, and offers choirs for children ages Pre-K through 7th grade. The Adult Choir, under Choral Director Victoria Shields, provides music during worship every Sunday morning and presents 1-2 formal concerts each year, including one during the Advent season. The choir welcomes returning and new members to its rehearsals on Thursday nights beginning Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Church School

Under the direction of Rev. Kathryn Kibbie Laird, minister for Children, Youth and Families, “Sunday’s Cool” kicks off its yearlong curriculum. Children begin worship in the sanctuary with their parents, then children in grades K-4 head to the Common Room for “Children’s Chapel” followed by an activity where they dig deeper into the Bible. Grades 5-7 meet in The Barn for their class, “Feasting on the Word,” which gives them a solid foundation for Confirmation in 8th grade.

Confirmation Class for 8th Graders meets every other Wednesday from 5-6:15pm, beginning September 7 and continuing through May 2017. In addition to the Wednesday classes, Confirmands will participate in MSYG events, attend church regularly, and go on the MSYG summer mission trip.

Youth Groups

Led by Rev. Laird, the church has many exciting opportunities for youth in its Elementary (grades 3-5), Middle (grades 6-8) and High School Youth Group programs. Each group meets regularly and participates in social- and service-oriented events throughout the year, both at the church and out in the community. A family bonfire for all families with children and youth is scheduled for Friday, October 21 from 6-8pm in the church backyard with a potluck dinner and s’mores.

Midweek Ministries

This fall brings some exciting changes to the lifelong learning program. On the first Wednesday of each month, starting on September 7th, faith family members of all ages will gather at 5:45 pm for Breaking Bread: Sharing Lives Congregational supper and storytelling program. Subsequent Wednesdays will offer a Wednesday Night Forum at 7:30 for active discussions on recent events or recent Pastor’s Forums. Beginning on September 20th, the Tuesday Morning Biblical Studies program starts at 11 am every Tuesday. All are welcome.
