  1. Yesterday, 3:30 ish, a young male wearing all black on a black Vespa came zooming up behind me on Ponus Ridge and passed me on the left, crossing the double yellow lines. He slowed down momentarily at the speed monitor by West School and then zipped on his way. Wonder if this was the scooter in question?

  2. Earlier this week I was traveling east on East Avenue (heading towards Route 123) with the intention of making a right turn on Hoyt. As I turned onto Hoyt, a young man, dressed all in black, was riding up on one wheel (a ‘wheelie’ as it’s known) in the middle of the road, rapidly approaching the front end of my vehicle. Fortunately, my reflexes are very good and I swerved out of his way, narrowly avoiding making him and his motorized bicycle a hood ornament on my vehicle.

Weeks prior, I was nearly run over by one of these motorized bicycles while exiting the Colonial barbershop on South Avenue. Here again my quick reflexes (I jumped out of his way) saved me and this young person riding on this bike from catastrophe.

I have since emailed First Selectman Dionna Carlson and have also met with her in her office (briefly) to discuss this burgeoning problem. She is very sympathetic to my and others’ concerns about this rash of motorized bicycles that we’re now seeing on the streets (and sidewalks) of New Canaan. She strongly urged me to write to the other town council members as well as to make my concerns known and heard at the next upcoming town council meeting which will be held on October 16th.

If you or anyone you know shares in these safety concerns then please plan on attending that town council meeting – the more voices that are heard, the sooner new ordinances (including those for fines) will be instituted.

A call to arms…if you will.

  3. This is a huge safety issue for the young children ( primarily boys) of our community. I am seeing more and more of these motorized bikes on our streets. They are essentially motorcycles and these young buys are driving them without a drivers license ( not to mention that motorcycles require a special motorcycle license) and any training. There is a reason that licensing is derferred to age 16. The you g boys of 12-15 who I see riding these motorized bikes don’t have the maturity level and good judgement to ride them safely. Pls attend this meeting and encourage the town council to pass ordinances and let’s get the NC police to get these bikes out of the hands of these young boys and keep them safe. A young boy earlier this year in Wesport was already killed on one of these.

  4. I was tailed and passed on Oenoke by a young teenager on an ebike recently-without a helmet. He passed me on the right, driving onto the shoulder to do so. He continued-passing another car and driving through the red light at the intersection of Park and Elm. Our town needs to address this dangerous situation before someone is killed and someone else’s life is ruined.
