New Canaan Police are asking for information regarding a car vs. scooter crash Tuesday night.
At about 7:31 p.m. on Sept. 24, police responded to a report of an accident on South Avenue near the northbound entrance ramp to the Merritt Parkway, according to a press release issued by NCPD.
It involved a sedan and Vespa scooter, the press release said.
The Vespa operator, a 17-year-old Stamford man, and the car driver, a 53-year-old Danbury woman, both were transported to Norwalk Hospital by New Canaan Emergency Medical Services, it said.
It wasn’t clear what condition they were in or whether police anticipate bringing criminal charges. The investigation is active and police are not releasing further details at this time.
The New Canaan Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, in addition to EMS and police, the press release said. The Darien Police Accident Reconstruction Team also responded to the scene and assisted in the investigation. Connecticut State Police and Stamford Police also responded and assisted.
The area has been reopened to traffic.
The New Canaan Police are asking anyone with information regarding the accident to call 203-594-3500, and reference Case #24-11251.
Yesterday, 3:30 ish, a young male wearing all black on a black Vespa came zooming up behind me on Ponus Ridge and passed me on the left, crossing the double yellow lines. He slowed down momentarily at the speed monitor by West School and then zipped on his way. Wonder if this was the scooter in question?
Earlier this week I was traveling east on East Avenue (heading towards Route 123) with the intention of making a right turn on Hoyt. As I turned onto Hoyt, a young man, dressed all in black, was riding up on one wheel (a ‘wheelie’ as it’s known) in the middle of the road, rapidly approaching the front end of my vehicle. Fortunately, my reflexes are very good and I swerved out of his way, narrowly avoiding making him and his motorized bicycle a hood ornament on my vehicle.
Weeks prior, I was nearly run over by one of these motorized bicycles while exiting the Colonial barbershop on South Avenue. Here again my quick reflexes (I jumped out of his way) saved me and this young person riding on this bike from catastrophe.
I have since emailed First Selectman Dionna Carlson and have also met with her in her office (briefly) to discuss this burgeoning problem. She is very sympathetic to my and others’ concerns about this rash of motorized bicycles that we’re now seeing on the streets (and sidewalks) of New Canaan. She strongly urged me to write to the other town council members as well as to make my concerns known and heard at the next upcoming town council meeting which will be held on October 16th.
If you or anyone you know shares in these safety concerns then please plan on attending that town council meeting – the more voices that are heard, the sooner new ordinances (including those for fines) will be instituted.
A call to arms…if you will.
