The water company’s installation of a main pipe on South Avenue, a project that has closed the major road this summer, is expected to wrap up before school starts later this month, officials say.

The Board of Selectmen received an update on the South Avenue road closure at its Tuesday meeting.

“They’re going to be off the day before the first day of school,” Public Works Director Tiger Mann told the selectmen at their regular meeting, held at Town Hall and via videoconference.

New Canaan Public Schools are scheduled to open Aug. 26.

Mann said to also expect a one or two-day closure later in the year to pave South Avenue.

“The actual construction and ground excavating is done before school starts,” he said. “Then we have to worry about when they’re going to do an overlay and repair the areas. That could be months after.”

In response to selectmen questions about timing, Mann said to expect this overlay some time around November.

“The state is working through that timeframe right now, but they typically like to let it sit for a little while before we have to pave,” he said. “That might be a day or two of inconvenience.”

Mann also described the project’s plan for the next two summers.

“They’re going to come back next year and ruin [South Avenue] again,” he said. “Then, the following year, the entire road will be reconstructed, including nine inches of new pavement.”

Mann also gave the selectmen updates about other road projects throughout town.

“For Route 106, they’ll be off by mid-October and then they have a month to repave the area,” he said, referring to the east side of town. “The state plans to do 106 from Main Street to Clapboard Hill some time in the September timeframe.”

Mann continued: “In mid-August, they’re going to be doing Route 124 from Lambert Road to just before Lukes Wood Road.”
