Dear Editor, New Canaanite:

As Chairman of the Election Committee for the New Canaan Republican Town Committee, and as a former Chairman of the New Canaan Board of Education, I feel it incumbent upon me to correct an odious (and frankly potentially libelous) misstatement of facts made by our opponents about the attendance record of one of our candidates for election in November. Specifically, I refer to a mailer sent today [Oct. 23] to Democrats and unaffiliated voters in New Canaan, which states “sponsored by New Canaan Democrats” and alleges that Julie Toal, a current member of our Board of Education who is seeking re-election, was “absent or late to 40%” of that Board’s meetings.  

A complete and utter lie.

My name is Bill Walbert, and the first thing I would like to offer is a hearty thank you to all of our neighbors who are running for town office. This is a well run town, made more so because of the thoughtful, consensus building efforts of our elected officials. New Canaan resident Giacomo Landi, an unaffiliated candidate, is seeking election to the Board of Education. Republicans hold a 6-3 majority on the nine-member school board. Five seats are up for election: three currently held by Republicans, two by Democrats. There are three Republicans and three Democrats running for Board of Ed, in addition to Landi, a write-in candidate.

Town resident Arvind Bajaj, a Republican, is seeking election to the Town Council, New Canaan’s legislative body. The GOP holds an 8-4 majority on the 12-member elected body. Six seats are up for election: four currently held by Republicans, two by Democrats. There are five Republicans and four Democrats running for Town Council. Here’s our exchange with Bajaj.

As first selectman of New Canaan, I have had the privilege of working closely with many dedicated volunteers and community leaders. It is with confidence and enthusiasm that I endorse the Republican Caucus-endorsed candidates for Town Council: Arvind Bajaj, Scott Gress, Pavla Levin, and Penny Young. New Canaan has long thrived under strong Republican leadership—leadership that has consistently prioritized fiscal discipline, thoughtful planning, and a deep respect for the character of our town.
