Election 2025: Dems Pick Up Seats on Board of Ed, Town Council

By Michael Dinan | November 5, 2025

New Canaan Democrats picked up seats on the Board of Education and Town Council in Tuesday’s municipal election, making gains on the elected bodies in this longtime Republican town where unaffiliated voters now make up the single largest voting bloc. All Democratic candidates won their races—as a result, the party picked up one seat on the school board and two seats on the Town Council. Incumbent Board of Ed member Julie Toal, a Republican, lost her seat, while only incumbents Penny Young and Kim Norton won election to the Town Council among the GOP, with three other candidates falling short.

Here are unofficial results for contested races:

The Town Council will now be composed of six Democrats and six Republicans, where the GOP had held an 8-4 majority prior to Tuesday’s election. On the school board, Republicans now hold a 5-4 majority, where it had been 6-3.

Tim Klimpl, chair of the Democratic Town Committee, said after the tally came in: “Tonight voters in New Canaan decisively chose better balance in our town government. New Canaan Democrats will protect our most beloved institutions.

Dear Editor,

New Canaan is truly special — a town defined by its strong schools, vibrant civic life, fiscal responsibility, and deep sense of community. For more than a century, Republican leadership has preserved these values through steady oversight, prudent financial management, and a steadfast respect for local control. That legacy of responsible governance is why our town continues to thrive today. This election, we face key decisions that will shape New Canaan’s future — from the North School project to the Town Charter revision and state-driven affordable housing mandates. These issues demand experienced, thoughtful leaders who balance fiscal prudence with vision and who understand the importance of both progress and preservation.

To the Editor:

As you can imagine being a longtime resident and active in community affairs, I have penned support letters for people who are likewise involved. I’ve really enjoyed lending my support.  But I tell you that I am truly excited about supporting Penny Young for a seat on the Town Council as her contributions to the community, especially our older adults, have been outstanding.  She’s had her hand in so many of the organizations in town that provide services from Lapham, Getabout, and Waveny LifeCare and jokes her efforts are not all altruism but more about making sure New Canaan is ready for her as she climbs the age ladder! We also share the honor of service on the Town Council and have been given the opportunity to serve additional terms.  I’ve been impressed with how she comports herself with her fellow councilmen, always with respect for their points of view and a willingness to entertain their proposals and evaluate how they address the needs of our community.  She can be steadfast and committed to an issue which after her research and input from the citizens she feels truly benefits us.  Sometimes it takes a while to convince her colleagues of the worthiness of a particular stance like the recent approval to form a Charter Revision Commission which she proposed several years ago.  But she remained committed to the value of periodic self-analysis and two years ago prevailed.
