The New Canaan Land Trust’s Firefly Sanctuary has reopened to the public following significant trail restoration work that required the preserve to remain closed this season. The restoration was led by NCLT Board Member Jim Tierney, working alongside Board Members Tom Robey and Eads Johnson, with guidance from local volunteer and Green Mountain Club trail builder Sven Englund. Much of the hands-on restoration work was carried out by all three sessions of NCLT’s Summer Steward interns, working throughout the summer under the direction of Intern Coordinator Nic Wickam-White (see photo). “Improvements include rerouting a section of trail to provide better walking conditions, installing new traction shingles on boardwalks and bridges, adding water diverters to improve drainage, and removing fallen across the trail,” organizers say. Located on Sleepy Hollow Road, the Firefly Sanctuary is now open to the public from dawn to dusk.

A vehicle reported stolen from Weed Street at 8:51 a.m. on Aug. 21 was recovered in New Canaan at Main Street and Elm Place, police said. The investigation is active.

The town in July spent a combined $8,045.50 in legal fees regarding affordable housing approvals at both Weed and Elm Streets and on Hill Street, according to a bill approved last Tuesday by the selectmen. The figure is nearly as much as the monthly $8,500 retainer paid by the town to the firm of Berchem Moses PC of Westport.
