Police arrested a 22-year-old Ponus Ridge man on misdemeanor drug charges Saturday after stopping his car downtown and finding marijuana and a grinder inside.

He was charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At about 5:51 p.m., an officer ran a license plate on the man’s 2009 Nissan Altima and found that the registration was expired. Stopping the car in the Morse Court lot, the officer smelled marijuana when the visibly nervous driver rolled down the window, according to a police report.

He handed over a grinder from the middle console and the officer in that same area found a Zip-Loc bag with more than .5 ounces of pot in it, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.

One of two passengers in the car handed over a small bag with a grinder, baggie with marijuana and four packages of rolling papers, Ogrinc said. That passenger, a 20-year-old from Darien, was cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The driver was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear Aug. 7 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
