A 77-year-old New Canaan man arrested last month after telling two juveniles downtown to “give me your backpacks” has been charged again after phoning a local business and asking about a person working there.
At about 7:16 p.m. last Wednesday, officers responded to 18 Forest St. — the street address of New Canaan Diner — after a man contacted the establishment asking when the victim gets off of shift, according to a police report.
Police identified the caller, the report said. Based on a prior investigation, he’d been told not to contact the establishment, it said.
Police arrested him for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, at his home.
Under state law, people are guilty of disorderly conduct if they “with intent to cause inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk … [e]ngages in … threatening behavior; or … annoys or interferes with another person,” among other reasons.
The man already faces a charge of second-degree breach of peace for the incident last month. The man hasn’t pleaded or hired a lawyer in that case, according to Connecticut Judicial Branch records. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 25 on the earlier charge.
For the new charge, police released the man after he promised to appear June 26 in state Superior Court.
