Dear Editor,

On Sunday I had the privilege of joining the cast and director of The Effect for an engaging post-performance conversation following The Town Players of New Canaan’s production at the Powerhouse Theater in Waveny Park.

Lucy Prebble’s play is a powerful exploration of love, science and mental health.  The cast delivered a thought-provoking performance which sparked an engaging dialogue about the importance of ethical guidelines in clinical trials, the scope of the placebo effect plus the development and use of pharmaceuticals to support mental health care treatment today.

Thank you to Town Players for creating a space where theater and psychiatry intersect, allowing us to consider not only the science, but also the deep personal experience of mental health treatment.

The Effect continues its run September 11 – 14.  Don’t miss it, get your tickets here.

Sincerely,

Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD

President and Medical Director, Silver Hill Hospital

  1. Dr. Gerber, I shared that privilege with you – and your mom! – and felt the same about this play. I asked you a “now vs. then” question regarding Silver Hill and was so happy to receive a piece of information (about the relative prestige of psychiatry over the past 20 years) that I didn’t have. Thank you.

  2. Your last chance is …. 2pm TODAY to see the FINAL performance of THE EFFECT. Audience members have been unanimous in their reactions: “Superb Acting”, “Glad we came”, “Daring Theatre. Congratulations!”, “Talked about it all the way home”! Buy tickets at the Powerhouse Theatre or online TPNC.org.

    Hope to see you TODAY!

  3. It was a very impressive performance and extremely thought-provoking. Kudos to The Town Players of New Canaan for producing innovative theater!
