New Canaan, a community that stands out for its high level of volunteerism, is preparing to recognize some of the town’s outstanding citizens.
Nominations for annual Volunteer Recognition Awards are due Jan. 30 (info and form here).
This year’s awards will be presented March 4 by the New Canaan Community Foundation. As the nomination deadline nears, we put some questions to Marley Thackray, an NCCF board member who chairs the Volunteer Recognition Awards.
Here’s our exchange.

New Canaanite: What are the Volunteer Recognition Awards? Please provide some background.
Marley Thackray: The Volunteer Recognition Awards celebrate the hometown heroes who dedicate their time and energy to supporting local nonprofits and making a meaningful difference throughout our community. Hosted by the New Canaan Community Foundation, the awards recognize individuals and groups of all ages who live in New Canaan or volunteer here.
What is NCCF’s view on the importance and impact of volunteerism here in New Canaan?
Volunteers are at the heart of New Canaan. That spirit was especially evident at NCCF’s first Volunteer Fair last weekend, where more than 40 local organizations shared volunteer opportunities and were met by an outpouring of volunteers of all ages — more than 480 community members attended the fair, from children and families to adults and seniors, all eager to get involved. So many New Canaan-based orgs are entirely volunteer-run by organizations, just another reason that makes our town so special.
What are some of the criteria that our readers should keep in mind in making nominations?
We encourage nominators to focus on impact, commitment, and consistency of service rather than titles. Awards are given across several categories — including Youth MVP, Youth Hall of Fame, Hands-On Rookie of the Year, Hands-On MVP, Hands-On Hall of Fame, and Outstanding Volunteer Group.
How do people nominate someone for an award?
Anyone can submit a nomination using the Volunteer Recognition Awards form during the open nomination period. All nominations must be submitted by Jan. 30 and the awards will be presented on Wednesday, March 4, at Town Hall. The form and details can be found here.
What else, if anything, would you like to say about the Volunteer Recognition Awards?
So much of the work that sustains our community happens quietly and without recognition. These awards give us an important moment to pause, say thank you, and celebrate the generosity that continues to shape New Canaan.
