Saturday’s referendum made one thing clear: a majority of the residents who turned out voted “no” on the summertime leaf blower ban. Yet, we were told our voices didn’t clear an arbitrary hurdle high enough to overturn the Town Council’s previous action.
This ordinance does nothing to foster community harmony. Instead, it pits neighbors against one another, introduces unnecessary costs for homeowners, and ignores the tidal wave of non-emergency police calls it will invite.
Why did the Council bypass reasonable alternatives—like standardizing noise restrictions before 8 AM and after 5 PM—while carving out special exemptions for Parks and Rec, gas-powered trimmers, and lawn mowers? The logic escapes me.
For transparency’s sake, I ask The New Canaanite to list the Town Council members who voted in favor of this restriction. Voters need to remember their names come election time so we can elect representatives who actually listen to the community. Town government is here to improve our quality of life, not add needless burdens.

Hi Frank, our coverage of the Town Council vote is here.
The requirement that “no” voters be 15% of the electorate is not “arbitrary” nor a “ridiculous regulation”. It is in the Town Charter, and would itself have to be changed through a vote. Also, I wonder what those who feel the vote was unfair think of the Electoral College??
